Come and do one of the most beautiful hikes in the Japanese Alps region not far from the city of Takayama: Kamikochi. A real favorite for lovers of nature and breathtaking landscapes!

If you're traveling to Japan, you're probably wondering where to start when you want to go outside of Japan's big cities. In particular, if you are in Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka, it is quite easy to get around everywhere in the country.

In this case, what better way than to visit the Japanese Alps for a break, just to get away from the big noises and the constant lights that surround you?

The Japanese Alps are above all a playground for lovers of hiking and nature. So if you like to do “outdoor” activities then you are in the right place!

Be aware that the best way to get there is by taking the bus to Takayama City.

Takayama is the central point to allow you to travel just about everywhere around the Gifu region, famous both for its numerous mountains, and also for its famous hot springs.

Among these mountains, there is one in particular that you absolutely must do at least once: it is Mount Kamikochi.

Where is Mount Kamikochi located?

Mount Kamikochi is located in Matsumoto Prefecture, a few hours by train from Tokyo.

The surroundings of the prefecture are mainly made up of mountain ranges. The whole forms what we call the Japanese Alps.

To date, Mount Kamikochi is one of the most visited places by tourists as well as Japanese. And for good reason, it is one of the most beautiful hikes in the region.

The central zone is located about 1,500 m above sea level and surrounded by mountain peaks reaching an additional 1,500 m. There are a variety of options for hikers of all levels and the mountains can be seen from afar or up close!

How do I get to Mount Kamikochi?

From Takayama City or Matsumoto City

If you are staying from Takayama, access to Mount Kamikochi is easy. All you need to do is go to Nohi Bus Station, which is located right next to Takayama Station.

Afterwards, the bus will take you to Hirayu Onsen Station, where you will have to wait for a second bus to Mount Kamikochi.

Travel time : ~1 hour 40 min

Ticket price : 5800 yen round trip (~37€)

First bus time : 7:00

Last bus time : 17:00

If you are staying from Matsumoto, you can opt for the train via the Matsumoto Dentetsu Line. Get off at Shin-Shimashima Station and then take the bus to Kamikochi.

Another alternative is to take the bus that takes you directly to Kamikochi from Matsumoto. Be careful, however, because there are only 2 buses per day from the city: 5:30am and 10:15am!

Ticket price : 4000 yen one way by direct bus (~25€)

First bus time : 5:30

Last bus time : 18:00

From the city of Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka

If you are in Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka: you will also need Take the Nohi bus who will first take you to Takayama, then you will have to buy the ticket to Mount Kamikochi.

Solo Backpacker Tip : Note that it is not possible to book bus tickets for Mount Kamikochi in advance. You will then have to go directly to the ticket office and get your tickets on D-day. Also remember to go to Nohi bus station as soon as possible. Because you will have to wait in line to hope for space on the bus: first come, first served!

Mount Kamikochi: a complete guide

Kamikochi (which means “where the gods have descended”) is The first attraction of Chubu Sangaku National Park and ideal starting point for numerous alpine adventures. The highlights of the park include spectacular scenery, a volcano, virgin forests, and the Azusa River, whose turquoise water flows through the heart of Mt.

Mount Kamikochi is accessible to all visitors between the end of April and mid-November every year.

Take the opportunity to discover this wonderful hike during the fall to admire the red leaves and a breathtaking view of Mount Hotaka, or in summer to enjoy a mild climate in the heights of the Japanese Alps.

Once there, I recommend that you Do the main loop bounded by the Kappa Bridge and the Myojin Point.

It is a path used by all hikers because it allows you to immerse yourself in nature, sit down to admire the idyllic landscapes. Take the time to look around you, go a bit off the main path to touch the turquoise water of the Azusa River.

The hike is not difficult, and is accessible to any age group. Indeed, The elevations are quite low, which makes walking much more pleasant and more profitable. So don't be surprised to see elderly Japanese people with their hiking sticks and outfits!

Whether you are alone or with the family, Mount Kamikochi is one of the most popular Japanese outings. It is therefore not uncommon to see many of them staying there for a few days in tents or staying in local hotels.

The walk itself will allow you to admire several facets of Mount Kamikochi. You will pass through a forest filled with trees of various species while following the Azusa River.

The climate at Mount Kamikochi

If you are planning to go to Japan in autumn, then I advise you to come Visit Kamikochi in early November. Because that's when the trees turn bright red. It is a setting with rich contrasts in color that must be seen at least once. The temperature is relatively mild (~10°C), which makes hiking much more enjoyable.

On the other hand, if you plan to leave in summer, the temperatures will be much milder and will allow you why not to put your feet in the water, as well as sleep under the stars in the tents if that tempts you!

What to wear for Mount Kamikochi

Wear adapted walking shoes such as sneakers or shoes suitable for hiking because many trails are not paved. It's best to wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty because you might be sitting by the river or walking for a long time.

It is recommended tobring extra outerwear to manage body temperature during a sudden change in weather. Don't forget to bring a K-way or windbreaker in case of rain or wind gusts.

Things to know before going to Mount Kamikochi

There are a few things you need to remember before heading to Mount Kamikochi:

  • Once there, you will not find no vending machine (or ATM). You will need to have something to pay by bank card in your possession.
  • Although Japan is a country with a lot of supermarket open 24 hours, know that there are none none in the vicinity of Mount Kamikochi. Only gift shops and a few establishments selling food are available. If you're only staying for the day, plan to buy food and drinks in Takayama or Matsumoto.
  • There is hotel-type accommodations around Mount Kamikochi for those who want to stay one night. I advise you to book in advance on The official site because they may be complete. The other alternative would be to take a tent and camping equipment with you to spend the night under the stars.

If I have to give you my opinion on Mount Kamikochi, it is definitely a thing to do if you pass through the Japanese Alps.

For a first trip, if you have a few weeks to spend in the Land of the Rising Sun, then consider taking a look at Takayama City as a base, which will make it much easier for you to get to Mount Kamikochi.

For those in a hurry among you, One day will suffice to go around. On the other hand, if you can afford it, consider staying an extra day, either in a tent or in a nearby hotel to take full advantage of what this place has to offer!
