Malta, an island with a mixture of Western and Arab cultures

Surely one of the under-served countries among its neighbors, Malta is nonetheless interesting to visit. Between picturesque landscape, cultural wealth and architecture blending Western and Arab culture, explore the island in a few days to discover everything it has to offer!

Everything you need to know before you go

Any questions? I have the answer for you! You'll find everything you need to know on my blog The Solo Backpacker.

How many days to visit Malta?

If you want to be able to discover Malta in length and breadth, 7 days will be perfect to do both the main island, Gozo and Comino.

For my part, I did 4 days on the main island and 3 days in Gozo. Unfortunately, for climatic and weather reasons, I was not able to do Comino Island, a must in the country if you are visiting for its turquoise water and its lagoon.

💡 MY OPINION : I really recommend spending at least 2 full days in Gozo, especially if you like hiking and beautiful landscapes! Because it is a truly exotic island, with many remote corners that are worth a visit. Then you can include in the 4 days on the main island for a half-day visit to Comino Island.

For those who travel less than 7 days, I do not necessarily recommend visiting Marsaxlokk and Popeye Village. Instead, prefer to explore the surroundings of Ghajn Tuffieha and to do Comino instead.

What is the budget for Malta?

The average daily budget in Malta ranges from 40€ (backpacker) to 120+€ (comfort) per person. Count approximately 80€ per day for a balanced stay including accommodation, meals, transport and activities.

Catégorie Budget backpacker Budget moyen Budget confort

TOTAL/jour 34–50€ 80–110€ 120€+

💰 TOTAL BUDGET FOR 7 DAYS

Backpacker : 238-350€

Average : 560-770€

Comfort : 840+

📊 MY REAL BUDGET (7 days, December 2025)

Lodging : €105 (€15/day)

Food : 210€ (~30€/day)

Transport : €105 (~€15/day)

activities : €5

Various : 13€

Total : 438€ for 7 days

💡 MY OPINION : As for the accommodation, as I left with my girlfriend, it cost us €30 for two for a shared apartment that we rented on Airbnb, so €15 per person.

For the foods, we had started eating in restaurants, and that was costing us on average €15 per meal. Then, we reduced our expenses by only eating in the morning and in the evening. In the meantime, we bought some snacks and some fruit to avoid being hungry during the day.

For the transporting, we have mixed between bus, ferry and Uber. We took the Uber when the bus travel time was too long and we wanted to optimize our time. The price is relatively cheap considering that there were 2 of us.

Practical information for visiting Malta

🌡️ WHEN TO LEAVE?

Best time: According to Partir.com, the best times are before and after summer vacation. Indeed, the climate is much better with fewer tourists.

When to go to Malta? (Source: Leave.com)

Spring (March-May): This is the period when the temperatures are milder, but pleasant for walking in the city and in nature

Summer (June-August): The hottest season in Malta. Ideal for enjoying the beach and the turquoise water.

Fall (Sept-Nov): The best time to enjoy fewer tourists, while still having warm temperatures to enjoy hiking and the beach.

Winter (Dec-Feb): The temperatures are cooler, but still pleasant for hikes without having to wear a down jacket or gloves.

💡 My opinion : We went to Malta at the end of December - beginning of January. Honestly, we enjoyed the stay. There was almost no rain, and the temperature was just too hot to not be too hot either!

✈️ HOW DO YOU GET THERE?

From France:

• Plane: 45€-200€, duration 2 hours 30 hours, companies: KM Malta, Transavia, Ryanair.

→ Find your cheapest flights with Google Flights, then book directly on the airline's website.

🚇 HOW DO YOU GET AROUND?

Public transport :

→ Bus - price of a 2 hour ticket: 2€ - The best transport to get around cheaply!

→ Train - Unfortunately there are no trains in Malta!

Taxi/Uber : Average trip price: 10 - 30€ depending on the distance - I take the Uber when the prices are affordable and when the bus trip is not optimal in some cases.

Scooter rental : 9€/day - Look on the website of LA Rentals Malta If you want to rent a scooter • On foot: Especially for hikes and walks in cities

💡 My advice : If you don't want to bother renting a scooter, the bus + Uber combo is the best compromise for visiting Malta.
